According to our recent inventory assessments, fewer than
five lead water service lines have been identified within our
system. Despite the limited presence of lead service lines, we are proactively working to address this issue. The Reading Area Water Authority (RAWA) has established the lead and copper
program to locate and replace any remaining lead service
lines. Our goal is to ensure that our customers have access
to safe, clean drinking water. Through the lead and copper
program, RAWA is committed to eliminating the risk posed
by lead service lines and maintaining public health.
Why Lead Service
Lines Matter
Water service lines are the pipes that carry water from
the large water mains in the street to homes, schools
and other buildings in Reading. When clean drinking
water passes through service lines made of lead, lead
can leach into the water and create a health risk. RAWA
takes active steps, including corrosion control, to prevent
this from occurring. Removing lead service lines will
further minimize this risk.
What You Can Do
Check information for your address on the Water Service Line Inventory Map.
If the inventory map shows that your private-side service line is of “unknown” material:
- Find and inspect your water service line using
this survey
- Contact RAWA to schedule an appointment to
have your service line inspected: (610) 406-6300
If you have a lead service line or galvanized service line requiring replacement (see Inventory Map) or if you live in a home with older plumbing fixtures, take These Steps
to minimize risk of lead exposure in drinking water.
